MAYBE WAL-MART ISN'T SO BAD

If you want to recycle here you have to drive and divide your recycle up into these walmart recycle bins. Unfortunately, they do not take glass and you have to drive to the next county and FIND the revolving recycle trailer to recycle your glass. I haven't decided, if the all the driving around to recycle is even making it worth it. So the key is to strive for zero waste. Except finding bulk around here would include a long drive and another hunt; of course, you could order it but then again you have all the shipping related costs and impacts. My family thinks I am nuts as I dig through their trash pulling out things that could be recycled, trying to change their habits. Coming from the bubble of Bellingham, where they make it easy to be righteous, your bubble will soon be burst by the reality of the real world.

CHRONIC ILLNESS

I looked north I looked south
All that I saw was the snarling mouth
Foam appeared charged with rage
Screaming I ran tripping into the cage
The fire spread like a dart
Shot too close to the heart
The bars burned with injurious energy
Blocking any escape and recovery
Pleas and threats were met with a shock
The key dangled so close to the lock
Mirrored reactions blinded the door
Onerous fight made it sting in the core
Chronic illness spread deeper in
Understanding blocked from within
Bringing out the worst on each side
Blocking the beauty in shame that lied
Death inevitable now too far spread
Peace and acceptance now fed
In the last breath and one last mile
Danced the mouth a smile
Burnishing darkness and fear
Whispering a ado with a tear

TO GRANDMOTHER'S HOUSE WE GO

The roads are paved
The fields are lawns
Houses stand
Where horses grazed
But the swing still hangs
From the old oak tree
Where the ashes of my
Grandparents lay
